Temburong, Brunei - South East Asia
Temburong is the eastern-most district (daerah) in Brunei. It is an exclave, as it is separated from the rest of Brunei by Malaysia and Brunei Bay. Its capital is Bangar. The main town located in the district is Pekan Bangar,
The district borders Brunei Bay to the north and Sarawak, Malaysia to the east, south and west. It has a population of 9,300 and covers 1,166 km˛ (450 mi˛), The Sungai Temburong river flows through the district, and the Sungai Pandaruan river forms the western section of the border with Malaysia, Brunei's first national park, the Ulu Temburong National Park, is located south of the Temburong district, covering 550 square kilometres of the Temburong forest. The national park has a scientific research centre facility, the Kuala Belalong Rainforest Field Studies Centre, which can only be accessible by boat. An Outward Bound centre can also be found within the national park, Brunei's main eco-tourism effort is aimed at the Temburong district, a sparsely populated part of the state, which is only accessible by boat from the capital. Temburong district has been geographically cut-off from the rest of Brunei since 1884, when the strip of land to the west was ceded to Sarawak. The area's chief attractions are the superb Ulu Temburong national park, and the various opportunities available to stay in Malay and Murut kampungs or Iban longhouses. The jumping off point for both of these areas is in the only town of size, Bangar, where there is little in the way of amenities. Wild riverboat rides through mangroves and jungle, infuse these excursions with an expedition-like atmosphere, The main attraction of Ulu Temburong Park is found after a one-hour walk, which brings you over a hanging bridge and along a wooden path, to the canopy walkway. This climb-a true test of nerves-is the highest of its type in Borneo but the view from the top is nothing less than breathtaking. You can see Brunei Bay to the north and Gunung Mulu Park in Sarawak to the south. Activities in the park include chartering small longboats to explore further upstream. The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre is along the way. The centre is part of a scientific research project examining the unique fauna of the park, Ulu Temburong National Park occupies approximately 50,000ha of the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve. The park's locality and steep, swampy terrain have limited human impact on the area and helped preserve its rich biodiversity, Established forest trails through the park include 7km of wooden walkways which protect ground vegetation and help prevent erosion. A canopy walkway affords visitors an opportunity to observe the rainforest's surprisingly diverse treetop ecosystems, In addition, a series of treehouses some 20m above the ground, and linked by hanging bridges, provides excellent observation points, Ulu Temburong Park Headquarters Information Centre, including staff quarters and a surau (prayer hall), is located at the confluence of the Temburong and Belalong Rivers. Access to the park is by temuai or longboat, and visitor accommodation within the park consists of some seven guest houses and three well-equipped campsites, In the easternmost part of Brunei is the Temburong District which houses the Ulu Temburong National Park (formerly known as the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve). This national park boasts of Borneo’s untouched lowland rainforests, revealing a magnificent diversity of flora and fauna. Wooden boardwalks and suspension bridges allow visitors easy access within the forest and a canopy walkway offers a birds-eye view of the surrounding forests. Ulu Temburong is only accessible by boat and tourists can take water taxis from the capital of Bandar Seri Begawan to the main town of Bangar in Temburong District. Tourists need not to worry about where they should stay since accommodation is available at the Ulu Temburong National Park Headquarters. Booking of accommodation can be made through travel agents in Bandar Seri Begawan, PermitVisits should be arranged through the Forest Department or a local tourism company The only solution is......... you better travel with travel agent. You know why? This is because only the travel agent can reach there. It is a very strict area. Not many local people can reach there because they need to write a letter to the district officer and many more. Therefore to avoid this , you better travel with the trevel agent. I suggest you better use freme travel agent Send Photo to a FriendAccessNational Park longboats take visitors up to park from freme travel rainforest Lodge. The boat ride is very memorable and is part and parcel of the national park experience. Be prepared to get out and push the boat when the river level is low! |
