The city of Ermera is also known as Vila Ermera, lies 58 Km from the capital along the same road. Ermera is one of only 2 land-locked districts in East Timor, of which the other one is Aileu. It borders Liquica to the north, Dili to the north east, Aileu to the east, Ainaro to the south east and Bobonaro to the west. The district of Ermera in East Timor was identical to that of the same name in Portuguese Timor. Its sub districts are Atsabe and Ermera. Friends of Ermera began in the year 2002, as a group of concerned citizens of the City of Casey and became an incorporated association in May, 2003. The work of the Friends of Ermera is to work for the benefit of the people of the district of Ermera and to help them to rebuild their lives and communities in a better way. It seeks to do this by raising funds, organizing the provision of goods, services and technical advice and even encouraging the local Australian groups who are able to do so to assist in this process of recovery and reconstruction. Ermera has many historical and administrative buildings and structures. Tourists arrive in Ermera to enjoy their vacation with family and friends. There are lovely parks and gardens in the region. East Timor is a country of Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor. The culture of Ermera reflects numerous influences, including Portuguese, Roman Catholic and Malay. East Timorese culture is heavily influenced by Austronesian legends, although the Catholic influence is also very strong. Among the Cities in East Timor, Ermera has some Portuguese-style buildings, along with the traditional totem houses of the eastern region. These are known as uma lulik or sacred houses in Tetum, and lee teinu or houses with legs in Fataluku. Craftsmanship is also widespread, as is the weaving of traditional scarves or tais in the city.
