This district is located at the southwest part of East Timor. This district boasts total 53,629 inhabitants. It is according to the census of 2004. The Ainaro district covers a region of more than 797 squatre kilometers, including an area of Hatu Udo city. The capital of Ainaro is the city of Ainaro, which is basically the small mountain town. The district is the same to that of the Portuguese Timor. It has not been changed basically. This district owns the same characteristics as it had during Portuguese era. There are some exceptions in this Ainaro district. During the Indonesian occupation, the sub-district of Turiscai was the part of Manufahi from Ainaro. The sub-district of Hatudo also included in the Ainaro in exchange. The suco of Mape-Zumalai was also incorporated with Cova-Lima in the year 2003. The district is enclosed with some districts in Hatu Udo. It is surrounded with Bobonaro to the west, Aileu to the north, Cova-Lima to the southwest, Manufahi to the south and Ermera to the northwest. There are some sub-districts in Ainaro. Hatu Udo is one of them. Other than Hatu Udo, the Ainaro, Hatu Builico, and Maubisse are the other sub-districts. |
