Maliana, East Timor - South East Asia
Maliana is one of the most visited tourist destinations in East Timor. This city is a wonderful place to come while on a trip to East Timor. This beautiful city is one of the sub districts of the Bobonaro district. In fact, Maliana is the capital of this district.
Maliana is situated 149 km southwest of Dili, the capital of East Timor. East Timor’s border with Indonesia is positioned just a few Km from the city. As of the year 2004, about 13,200 resided in Maliana. Maliana thrives in the agriculture sector, especially in rice production. The bulk of the population of Maliana is heavily reliant on agriculture for their livings. The primary reason for this is that rice has become the favored staple food among most people of the country. Most of the people in Maliana are farmers who cultivate crops like rice and maize. There was an excellent irrigation system during the Indonesian occupation over East Timor. The management of water supply to the rice fields was also of high standards during this period. In fact, during Indonesian invasion, Maliana served as rice production storage to support other districts in the country. The city exported rice to other places in Atambua Western Timor. At present, there are two main sources of water irrigation that provides water to paddy fields. These sources include the Nunura River in Soso and the Bui Pira River. Maliana is constituted of five sub-districts, namely - The dialects spoken by most people in Maliana are Bunak and Kemak. However, majority of the people understand the Tetum language. During Portuguese occupation, Maliana had a famous school known as Collegio Infante sagres. This school was run by a catholic mission and several educated people of the country have graduated from this senior high School.
