Passabe, East Timor - South East Asia

One of the popular Tourist Destinations in East Timor is Passabe. Passabe is a sub-district of the Oecussi-Ambeno district in East Timor. Passabe in East Timor is an enclave that is beautifully surrounded by Indonesian West Timor.

According to the 2004 census, the population of Passabe at East Timor reached 7,531, with in 1,153 households. Passabe is a small village or sulo in the sub-district, very near to the Indonesian border. Passabe in East Timor has witnessed a massacre of East Timorese by pro-Indonesia militias in the follow-up to the 1999 referendum for the independence of East Timor.

A famous documentary film, directed by James Leong and Lynn Lee was based on the story of Passabe at East Timor. The film documented the lives of several Passabe residents 5 years after the violence, including the life of an admitted former-militia member. The film chronicled the ways in which the community has come to terms with what happened during the turmoil.

It is a coastal exclave in the western part of the island of Timor, separated from the rest of East Timor by West Timor. The capital of Oecussi-Ambeno is Pante Macassar, also called Ocussi Town, or formerly, in Portuguese Timor, by the name of Vila Taveiro.

The district has an area of 815 square Km and travelers can reach there by ferry boat that connects the territory to Dili, arriving twice a week on a journey which takes about 12 hours. Passabe in East Timor can be traveled easily from its district, Oecussi-Ambeno.

There is an airport called the Oecussi Airport, which operates some flights for the tourists trying to get in Passabe in East Timor. Oecussi-Ambeno was the first part of the island of Timor on which the Portuguese established their control. The district is called the cradle of East Timor.

The people of Passabe speak Tetum and Portuguese. Indonesian is widely used as a lingua franca in the area. With regard to religion, the majority of the inhabitants of Passabe in East Timor are Roman Catholics.
