Surabaya in Java has a number of military statues, but the Tugu Pahlawan, Java is definitely the most impressive one. The monument becomes a major point of attraction every November 10th, when the whole country celebrates "Heroes Day" to honor those heroes who died during the war of independence.

Tugu Pahlawan, Java was initially the site of the prestigious Kenpetai Building, which houses courts of the colonial justice ministry. It is said that the Japanese army used this place during the war as a detention center to inflict torture to the local people. It is even reported that this monument was bombed by the Japanese at the end of their occupation. You can still find the remnants of the building's entrance, which stands as the backdrop for the statue of the heroes located at the southern part of the Kebunrojo Garden.
