Merapi in Indonesia - South East Asia
Merapi is one of the popular volcanoes in Indonesia. It is a conical volcano and erupts frequently. Merapi is also a major tourist attraction in the country and plenty of tourists and nature lovers undertake excursion trips to the volcano.
Merapi in Indonesia is also known as Mountain of Fire. It is called Gunung Mearpi in the local language. The volcano is located in the area between central Java and Yogyakarta. The city of Yogyakarta is very close to the volcano. There are also villages in the lower part of the volcano. Merapi has experienced numerous eruptions since its first eruption in the year 1548. A volcano monitoring zone has also been set up near the site. Merapi has been designated as a Decade Volcano due to its active nature over the years. Apart from research efforts, numerous hiking and trekking trips are also undertaken in Merapi in Indonesia. Travelers can obtain necessary information from the tourist office. Various travel agencies also organize guided tours to Merapi.
