The Pura Taman Ayun, Bali is better known as the 'Garden Temple in the Water'. This magnificent temple is nestled on an island in a river. The innermost temple in the complex is encircled by a moat. In front of the entrance to the inner temple lies a large fountain basin, dedicated to the rulers of the underworld. The fountain basin is set up on the far side of the candi bentar (split gate). You can enter the innermost courtyard through a candi korung (covered gate). It constitutes 27 buildings of various size and function. The exquisite wooden merus or pagoda-like shrines in the temple catches the attention of the tourists especially.

The Pura Taman Ayun, Bali was constructed in the year 1637, during the rule of Raja Gusti Agung Anom. However, it was in the year 1937 when this temple complex was extended substantially and given its present form. At the far end of the temple there is an eleven-tiered meru in the right hand corner. This meru is devoted to the rice goddess Dewi Sri. The third bale is placed on the left corner. It is believed to be the abode of a number of gods.
