One of the most impressive temples in Bali is the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. It is home to one of the most beautiful upland shrines in the island of Bali. This conventional Hindu thatch-roofed temple, consisting four compounds, is positioned by the western banks of Lake Bratan in the Bedugul Highlands. You can enjoy a paddle boat ride across the lake and witness Pura Ulun Danu Bratan at sunrise. This important Hindu-Buddhist temple was established in the year 1633 by the King of Mengwi. The temple is consecrated to Dewi Danu, the Goddess of the waters. The Goddess is venerated as a source of fertility. Pilgrimages and ceremonies are held here to ensure that farmers in Bali have sufficient water for irrigation.
