Rinjani volcanoes in Indonesia - South East Asia
Rinjani is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. It is also a major tourist spot in the country. It is the second highest volcano in the country. Rinjani has experienced plenty of eruptions. The eruptions have been mostly moderate in nature.
Rinjani in Indonesia is located on the island of Lombok. It is a stratovolcano and rises up to a height of 3,726 meters. The first eruption in the volcano took place in the year 1847 and since then it has erupted several times. The recent eruption occurred in the year 2004. There is also a crater lake in the volcano named Segara Anak. It is a beautiful sight. To protect the mountain and the Crater Lake, a national park was set up in the year 1997. The Crater Lake in Rinjani, Indonesia is a great place to visit. The crater is around 6 Kms in length and 8.5 Kms in breadth. There are hot springs around the crater which emit hot water and smoke. A small cone was formed after the eruptions between the period of 1994 and 1996. The cone has been named as Gunung Baru in the local dialect. Rinjani is surrounded by sprawling greenery and woodlands. The low areas of the highland consist of fertile lands where farming is carried out. There are rice, tobacco, soybeans, and cotton, cinnamon and vanilla plantations in the place. Local people consider Rinjani in Indonesia as very sacred. Thousands of pilgrims visit the Segara Anak Crater Lake for religious purposes. The rugged terrain of the volcano also makes it very popular for trekking and mountain hiking trips. Various travel agencies organize excursion trips to the volcano. The ideal time to visit Rinjani is during the winter season when the weather is pleasant with scanty rainfall. The Gunung Rinjani National Park which surrounds the volcano is a major center for eco tourism. It is an idyllic spot and is home to wide species of flora and fauna. Tourists as well nature enthusiasts come here to have a feel of the scenic beauty.
