Don Khong, Laos - South East Asia
This small town is at the heart of area known as Si Phan Don, or Four Thousand Islands, close to where the Mekong spills into Cambodia. In the dry season the massive river recedes to reveal the islands. A visit to the area provides the chance to witness a simple rural way of life, see several impressive waterfalls, and, if you’re lucky, view endangered Irrawaddy dolphins.
Don Khong is the main island in the South Mekong river region know as the 4000 islands, one of the most scenic areas in Laos. Attractions in the area include waterfalls - some of the biggest in SE Asia, dolphins and local villages. Muang Khong, a small village at the east edge of Don Khong, is the main base for travelers. The islands of Don Khon (S from Don Khong) and Don Det have less facilities but are attracting an increasing number of visitors. These 2 islands are the best base for visiting the Somphamit waterfalls and dolphin watching. Unofficial border crossing point (Cambodia) Warning these options may not be safe.
