Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, Myanmar - South East Asia
Established in 1999 and situated in Mohnyin Township of Kachin State, Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest inland lake in Southeast Asia and covers an area of 299.32 square miles. It rains all the year round there with the annual average rainfall measuring at 1,440 mm. In summer, average temperature is 27.9°C and in the cold season, it is 17.2°C. To reach there, you can drive 700 miles from Yangon to Mohnyin, 45 miles along the all-weather road from Mohnyin to Hopin, then 27 miles along the fair-weather road from Hopin to Lontene village.
Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary was established with the aims to conserve the largest inland lake in Southeast Asia, to protect resident water birds, migratory birds and forest-dwelling birds, to conserve Indawgyi watershed area, and to promote ecotourism in the region. At present, it is providing sanctuary to such a variety of wildlife as leopard, golden cat, the Malaya sun bear, gaur, banteng or wild cow, serow, goral, sport-billed pelican, vulture, other types of water birds, 120 species of forest birds, Myanmar peacock and soft-shell turtle.
