Kanbawza Thadi (Bago), Myanmar - South East Asia
Kanbawza Thadi, the famous palace of King Bayintnaung (AD 1551-1581) is extensively excavated and some buildings are being reconstructed. King Bayintnaung was the founder of the second Myanmar Empire which stretched from India to parts of Thailand and Laos. In 1566 AD he built the capital city called Hamsawady on what is now Bago. He built his grand palace to the south of the Shwe San Daw Pagoda.
Excavation has unearthed six mounds, which reveal the brick foundations and plinths of the old palace. The Settaw Saung, one of the main rooms of the palace, has been reconstructed and the work is 99% completed. There is also an archaeological museum on the excavation site. |
