Moeingyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary in Myanmar - South East Asia
The Sanctuary lies 70 miles north of Yangon between Bago and Waw Townships in Bago Division, and can be reached along the Yangon-Bago-Pyinpongyi Highway. Moeingyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary, that covers an area of 40 square miles, was established in 1986 with the intention of conserving resident and migratory water birds and their habitats, conducting scientific research on these birds, educating the public on the importance of wetland ecosystem, and encouraging public participation in wetland conservation activities.
More than twenty species of aquatic grass and herb (Emergent macrophytes) including kaing grass are present in the Sanctuary and Notsaba (Oxyza officinalis) grows particularly in shallow area of the Sanctuary. Kaing grassland especially is the most suitable breeding ground for water birds. Moreover, it is home to 42 species of water birds and 33 species of shore birds. According to the census conducted in January 1998, a total number of 4,529 birds inhabited Moeingyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary. By visiting the Sanctuary, bird-lovers can enjoy a wealth of opportunities and facilities for study and recreation. Some of them include watching resident and migratory water birds while enjoying the natural view near Yangon, conducting research activities on wetland ecosystem, study of wetland environment by boat, accommodation for five to ten persons in each guest house, and nine boat-shaped timber houses accommodating two in each room. |
