The primarily Catholic nature of the Philippine nation comes to the fore in the predominance of Christian festivals. Apart from these, New Years day, military parades and all the festivals of the various minorities of the country are also vigorously celebrated. Each region has its own set of patron saints who are variously honored through the year.
Ati-Atihan, in the third week of January, is a tribute to Santo Nino. Spread over three days, it is a riotous blend of dances, revelry and processions, ending in church rituals. The province of Cebu holds a week long festival called the Pasundayag sa Sinulog, which is marked by the crowds, dressed in costumes, dancing the Sinulog (a traditional dance).
The holy week of Easter sees the whole country observing rituals and ceremonies - Palm Sunday (Palaspas) is marked by processions of priests and town people waving palm fronds. The Cenaculo, which is an enactment of the Passion of the Christ, is celebrated in town squares and theatres all through the Easter week. Good Friday (Penitencia) is observed with great intensity, sometimes with enactments of crucification. The Black Saturday vigil is marked by presentation of the 'Vigilia ng Muling Pgkabuhay'. Easter Sunday (Sabado de Gloria) is celebrated by observing enactments of the 'Rising of Christ'.
The month of May sees many festivals. The Santakrusan Festival is a parade of the town's young folk portraying the Marian Litany of Titles. Flowers and food are variously offered at the Flores de May festival, the Paalay Festival and the Tayo na Antipolo festivals. Animals have their day too - the farmers pay tribute to the carabao on the fest day of San Isidro Labrador, their patron saint.
A festival of recent vintage, the Masskara Festivals, held on Negros Island, takes place in October every year. This festival was originally conceived of during the economic depression era of the 1980s as a means to boost the morale of the locals - the tradition continues with masked dances and festivities.
November sees the Feasts of San Clemente, which is a thanksgiving this patron saint of the fishermen.
