Singapore Cable Car has changed the face of transportation in Singapore. The cable car in Singapore was inaugurated in 1974 and this kind of aerial car is the first of its kind in the world which covers the total area of a harbour. The Singapore Cable Car is also known as the gondola lift or the aerial tramway. The Singapore Government came up with the brilliant idea of aerial cableway in 1968 but it was not until 1972 that the project started materializing. Singapore cable car is a huge project with an expenditure plan of $ 5.8 million. The Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Goh Keng Swee declared the project officially open on 15th February in 1974. Singapore Cable Car is one of the major tourist attractions in Singapore. Initially the car had 43 cabins and the whole system was operated manually. In 1976 the number of cable cars increased and it became 51.Mass Weddings were introduced in the later period of 70's. However an unfortunate incident occurred in 1983. Seven people were killed in this accident. Singapore cable car is a popular mode of transport for the Singaporeans and more than 10 million people have successfully completed their ride in this cable car. Singapore cable car is famous all over the world and the car was used as part of the Miss World Pageant. In 1994 the old cable cars were replaced and the capacity of Singapore cable car increased manifold. The remarkable growth of Singapore cable car reached its pinnacle with the manufacturing of glass-bottomed cabins which were included in 1999. In March 2004 Singapore cable car started this innovative game which was kind of an endurance test. The Surviving the Sky Challenge is a competition for the longest surviving member in the cable cars.
